Supporting Caregivers and Providers Through Narrative-Based Suicide Prevention Training

MIRECC’s mission includes improving care for Veterans experiencing dementia, PTSD, and other mental health challenges through research, education, and clinical initiatives.

Gig Line Media partnered with the Veterans Health Administration Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) to produce a series of caregiver and provider training videos focused on firearm safety conversations with elderly Veterans experiencing cognitive impairment.

The Challenge

As cognitive decline and dementia increasingly affect aging Veterans, caregivers and healthcare providers are often faced with difficult conversations around firearm safety.

MIRECC leaders sought training content to show what these conversations look like in practice while balancing emotional realism, clinical relevance, and practical guidance that providers and caregivers could apply in their own interactions with aging Veterans.

The Idea

Use cinematic, narrative-based storytelling to transform firearm safety training into emotionally relatable, real-world learning experiences.

The creative approach emphasized realism, emotional nuance, empathy, and proven communication techniques that audiences could apply in conversations with Veterans and loved ones. The goal was to place caregivers and providers alongside the characters, helping them navigate the challenges of cognitive decline, independence, trust, and family dynamics while learning how to approach sensitive firearm safety conversations with compassion, confidence, and clarity.

Video Production

We developed and produced three scripted training videos set in domestic and clinical environments. The series explored conversations caregivers and providers may encounter when discussing firearm safety with aging Veterans experiencing cognitive impairment, including:

  • A VA healthcare provider discussing firearm safety with a Veteran experiencing cognitive decline
  • A caregiver successfully navigating a supportive firearm safety conversation
  • A more difficult interaction with a caregiver that is resolved through patience, empathy, and trust

Designed as practical training tools, the videos modeled compassionate communication techniques and helped caregivers and providers build confidence approaching sensitive conversations.

Relatable Story, Reliable Storytellers

Training content is most effective when audiences can see themselves reflected in the experience.

Led by Army Veteran and Emmy Award-winning director Robert Ham, the project combined:

Results & Impact

The project delivered three narrative-based training films exploring firearm safety conversations with aging Veterans experiencing cognitive impairment. Through realistic scenarios the series modeled practical communication techniques for navigating difficult conversations around independence, safety, and family dynamics.

Together, the films strengthened the VA’s ongoing suicide prevention and lethal means safety education efforts while providing long-term Section 508-compliant training assets for use across the VA healthcare system.

Building on Gig Line Media’s extensive experience supporting the VA and Veteran-serving organizations on suicide prevention, lethal means safety, and mental health initiatives, the project reflected the VA’s continued trust in GLM to handle sensitive Veteran-centered topics with authenticity, emotional intelligence, and clinical alignment.
